CBD is not CBG: what do they have in common and how do they differ?

CBG: The “stem cell” of all known cannabinoids

CBG can be described as the "first" or "original'' cannabinoid that is formed in a cannabis plant. It is responsible for the development of CBD, THC and other cannabinoids, which are better known to the public, that is why CBG is often referred to as the cannabis "stem cell". CBG or cannabigerol is a phytocannabinoid. Unlike endocannabinoids, which are produced in the body, phytocannabinoids come from plants such as cannabis.

The highest concentration of this cannabinoid can be found in plants in bloom. As the plant grows, the enzymes convert CBGA to THCA (tetrahydrocannabinol acid), CBDA (cannabidiol acid) and / or CBCA (cannabichromenoic acid). After harvest, the plants are dried and processed. In the processing process, decarboxylation occurs - i.e. removal of carboxyl groups and conversion of acidic compounds (CBGA, THCA, CBDA) to non-acidic (CBG, THC, CBD). Many other cannabinoids are also formed, but all originally came from the CBGA.

What does CBG help with and how does it differ from CBD?

Both of these substances are cannabinoids and their effects are also very similar. But what differs is their chemical composition. CBG is also less concentrated. They also differ in the way they interact with the endocannabinoid system.

Both of these cannabinoids have an anti-inflammatory effect, but CBG appears to be more effective. So far, it has proved its worth especially in the fight against inflammatory bowel disease and in the treatment of bacterial infections (it helps, for example, with recurrent bladder inflammation). In addition, CBG, unlike CBD, promotes appetite.

Selected previously known effects of CBG and CBD:

CBG:

  • supports the activity of the brain and nervous system
  • helps with digestive problems
  • relieves cataracts
  • has an antibacterial effect
  • helps with eating disorders

CBD:

  • relieves pain
  • has an anti-inflammatory effect
  • suppresses tumor growth
  • reduces epileptic seizures
  • supports the vascular system
  • regulates blood sugar levels
  • calms

CBD and CBG:

  • relieve nausea
  • have healing effects
  • support immunity
  • alleviate depressive states
  • relieve inflammation
  • improve sleep
